9 Seedbop Habits? Can I really move past fear and stuckness, become a creative genius, solve big problems and flourish? I believe you can. Science says you can. It’s not a fast and easy path, but if you start practicing the habits and persist through the hard stuff, you can make things happen, make your heart sing, and have more fun.

Is this you?
You took an art class to ‘access your creativity.’ A few people did some fantastic stuff. You think you could never do amazing stuff. You think it’s because you aren’t talented or gifted enough to do things that really wow you. Let alone, other people.

At work, it’s the guy down the hall that comes up with all the great solutions to problems. How does he do that? You think you don’t have that kind of brain.

You think if you really put yourself out there:
• tried something new,
• suggested a solution no one is mentioning at work,
• followed your curiosity and passion and made something that just popped into your brain one day

…people would think you were frivolous, silly, or worse –ignore you. So you don’t even try.

Or if you do try and get rejected or fail, you give up, convinced you aren’t creative.
You’re no Einstein, Steve Jobs, Madam Curie, or Banksy.

You are so right! You, thankfully, aren’t other people.

YOU ARE YOUR OWN CREATIVE GENIUS.

Right now. You just don’t know how yet.

I once thought I couldn’t sing. Real singers just opened their mouths, and incredible sounds came out. Then my violin teacher said, “Of course, you can sing; you play the violin.” So I visited Ray Adams, Aspen Choral Society founder and director. He said sing! I did, and he said something that changed my life, “You can sing; you just don’t know how.”

Ray told me the truth. Science backs it up. You are creative. You are innovative. You can solve complex problems. You just maybe don’t know how.

You can make, create, and bring what is uniquely yours into life. And the world needs that. You just need to practice the habits that ‘seedbop’ your brain into creative hyper-gear.

“As strange as it sounds, creativity can become a habit. Making it one helps you become more productive.”
– Jonathan Plucker, Ph.D., creativity researcher psychology professor at Indiana University.

Creativity isn’t linear. It curves and loops around. It wanders about. There is no “fast and easy” way to creative genius.

But start practicing these habits and watch your brain flourish.

When you weave these scientifically proven practices into your life, your brain will illuminate and focus your attention on what really matters. You will start to notice patterns. Confusing things (I’m stumped!) begin to make sense.

You get pinged with a seedbop. Have an “Ah Ha!” moment.

A new direction has emerged, and you open yourself to new horizons.

Then the work starts.

But now you know how to bring those initial seedbops of pure inspiration into the light of day.

Into something that means something.

Something that makes your heart sing.

“The secret to life is to put yourself in the right lighting. For some, it’s a Broadway spotlight; for others, a lamplit desk. Use your natural powers — persistence, concentration, and insight — to do work you love and work that matters. Solve problems, make art, think deeply.”
― Susan Cain, Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking

To fertilize the ground where seedbops take hold and grow, here are 9 practices you’ll want to work into your life. These practices will open the flow of creativity and ease your way to manifesting better work and a better life.

“Practice isn’t the thing you do once you’re good. It’s the thing you do that makes you good.”
― Malcolm Gladwell, Outliers: The Story of Success

You can find a creative process that works for you and do/make/innovate something wonderful.

At the least, you’ll change your life, and you just might change the world.

Cast expectations and fears aside, and do it!

And here they are – those 9 Essential Steps to seedbop your life:

1. Get clear about the thing you want now. What does your gut tell you? What makes your heart sing?

2. Ask your brain and your heart what might work? Write down (or draw) everything that comes up.

3. Stop thinking. Retreat. Sit with things for a while without trying to solve anything. Let your right brain do its work. Complicated feelings will come up. Practice self-compassion with every step.

4. The flow of seedbops is emerging. Start with evaluating what you like. What could work? What might get you where you want to go? What makes your heart sing?

5. Get Curious: Wander about in a world you don’t know. Look at things like you are seeing them for the first time. Talk to people you don’t know. Ask questions. Use your beginner’s mind.

6. Take Yourself Seriously. Believe In Yourself. Explore Other Ideas Similar to Yours. Research. Stash materials. Learn New Skills. Nourish your expertise. New Seedbops Will Break Through. Pay Attention. Hone Your Ideas.

7. Here is where the Real Work starts. Pick the most exciting seedbop. Listen to your heart and gut. Approach this idea in as many ways as you can. Play with solutions. No judgment.

8. Now Begin. It’s time to make things real. Persist through uncertainty, confusion, and overwhelm. It takes as much time as it takes. Don’t give up. Embrace flexibility and adaptation and keep trying new things.

9. Keep working until the right thing, reveals itself. Trust that you’ll know in your gut when you’ve arrived. Then work to bring your brilliant solution into existence. Make it real! Share it with others. You’ll Change their world.
